Uniforms

Talk to any girl in town, which (guy) uniform they like the most, and they will answer u "Navy!" and some will even be more specific by saying "Thai Navy!" with the reason "Their dark skin look so good in that full white uniform! They look so solid!"

Sigh... these uniform guys are killing us man! They get all the girls' attention and leave us in the dark. Such a sad case. But what can we do? I guess we can only go with the girls by saying "yea lo, they look soooooo smart!" (with a knife through the heart)

Let's accept the fact: Girls just love guys in uniform, but they hate their work time. Am i right? (Navy go on sea for 3-6 months, Commercial Pilots fly odd hours any day of the week, and RMAF Pilots fly to hell with the HAWK aka Flying Coffin)

Me - Chen Yow Jong

Well, this is me, in uniform, but not MAS' uniform. MAS send us (trainees) to Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (MIAT), a private institute, for basic studies for 2 years. And this is what i wear to class everyday for the past 2 years.

When i finish my 5 years course and be established as a License Aircraft Engineer (LAE), then only i'll be issued with my License Booklet and uniform. Not to forget, 3 beautiful Golden Bars on the shoulders as a sign of success & accomplishment.

Dreaming of the day to come...
3 BARS = LAE
3.5 BARS = Lead Engineer
4 BARS = Foreman

However, the road to success is hard & painful. Not only u gotta get scolding by LAEs and mechanics (who are more experience, even though lower rank); but also wear the lowest rank uniform in the whole company.

It's so low that no one will even notice u when u walk by them, that's how low it is. But it's not the appearance that matters to be an engineer, it's the qualification that matters. We gotta be humble in work, learn from the experts. After 3 years, i'll be rewarded for all my hard work.

So what's this lowest rank uniform i'm talking about? Here it is.

Trainee Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (TAME) uniform

Dun laugh! Dun do that ewwww face! This is what i'll be wearing 5 days a week, for the next 3 years. 2 years in MIAT, i was wearing white uniform, from 3rd year onwards, i'm degraded to a blue uniform which looks like a cleaner.

On the left sleeve is MAS' logo. On the left pocket is where i put my very important ID which allows entry to the highly restricted hangar area. Above it is number '3' which means i'm a year 3 trainee. And on the right pocket is where i keep a ball-pen/fine marker pen (very useful) with a MAS batch above it.

Come to think of it, there's no point giving us white uniform to wear. We know nothing at this stage. All we know is what we learn from books, but we know nuts of the real aircraft.

Coconut with nothing but water inside.

So why wear such a prestigous uniform when u have a coconut shell head? "Be patient, your day will come, and u will shine!" That's what i told myself.

Furthermore, this 3 years will be the golden years for me to learn up everything. I'll have to learn up EVERYTHING before i be an engineer and start giving orders to other people. So, i'll be drenched with black oil and hydraulics, crawling inside the fuel tank, and cleaning up toilet bowls which are TERSUMBAT (thanx to inconsiderate passengers).

Each plane has 1 Lead Engineer, who controls around 7 LAEs. Why 7? 1 left wing, 1 right wing, 1 landing gear, 1 fuselage tail section, 1 fuselage middle section, 1 fuselage nose section, and 1 cockpit. And so, foreman (highest rank of engineer) controls the Lead Engineers.

Ear Muff

This is what we always use when we run the engine. Ear plugs are ok, but not protective enough to our delicate ear drums. Mind u, aircraft engines are louder than F1 engines.

This ear muff of mine is of lower category which cost RM20? The higher end ones which are foldable and have higher noise reduction can cost bout RM150 a pair.

I do hope that my grandchildren do not need to scream while talking to me in future. That would be embarassing them! Safety first.
As for now, football time! Argentina vs Mexico! i'm on Argentina!

  • I was browsing the internet on MIAT and found this blog. Not intruding but I have something which needs some straightening up. That 'cleaner' uniform is sometimes worn by a few LAEs like myself since it's a bit more comfortable and practical since it'd be easier to wash less it gets dirty.

Please don't say that you've only learned through books. Some years ago we recruited a semester three student who was absolutely knowledgable who was willing to look for material outside of that being thought there while spending many hours in the hangar working on his skills.

    Best Regards.

LAE who will nag you should you come in contact with him

  • Master Chen Yow Jong,

Came across your blog by chance. I am approaching 50 years old and I started in the aircraft industry same like you. Can't help it BUT i have to put in my 10 cents worth of comments.

3 beautiful Golden Bars - Yup! beautiful allright and you should be very proud of it. Malaysia, once upon a time being part of the British Empire by default cannot run away from its cultures and customs and that also include the 3 beautiful Golden Bars or insignia or epaulettes or stripes.

Not going into details, below are some notes on the apprenticeship and also the epaulettes:-

    +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++

    The Halton Apprentices
Following Alfred’s death in January 1918, the Halton estate passed to his nephew Lionel, who subsequently sold it to the war office in 1919. Meanwhile, the Royal Air Force had been formed on 1st April 1918 and it’s first Chief of the Air Staff, Lord Trenchard, foresaw the need to produce an elite corps of highly skilled aircraft engineers who would provide the backbone of the nascent RAF. To meet this requirement, he founded the RAF Apprentice Scheme in 1920.
Entrance to an RAF apprenticeship was by qualifying examination and interview, thus ensuring a high quality, well-motivated student intake. Boys aged 15-16 arrived to spend 3 years learning the theory and practical application of the various engineering trades in a wide-ranging military syllabus. Halton quickly established itself as the premier aeronautical engineering college in the world; nine nations sent students here for training. By the 1950s, the Halton apprentices had built up a reputation second to none, which was recognised by the award of a Sovereign’s Colour, awarded by Her Majesty the Queen in 1952.

    +++ +++ ++++ ++++ +++
Engineer Officers bear the same number of stripes, on cuffs and on epaulettes, as Deck Officers with the complementary rank. For instance, a Chief Engineer bears 4 stripes, as a Captain does, but they are distinguished by the cuffs and epaulettes bearing the Engineer's Blue or purple between the stripes. There is a popular legend that Engineers wear the color purple, granted by the King (royal purple) in honor of the RMS Titanic's Engineers who never abandoned their stations and went down with the ship. But that colorful story is not quite correct, for such an insignia has been worn by Royal Navy engineers at least since 1864. A more probable origin dates back to the 1830s, when Joseph Whitworth invented the method of making truly accurate flat surfaces, by using Engineer's blue. The method is also used for testing bearing and journal surfaces. It may be this color, that Engineers wear.

    **** ***** ******

Naval uniforms were first introduced in the Royal Navy in 1748. At first only for officers and midshipmen, from 1787 warrant officers also were required to wear a uniform. The actual rank held by an officer was shown by the so-called distinction lace, introduced 1783, and, for senior officers, by the presence of epaulettes, the embroidered gold shoulder straps which were introduced from 1795. Until 1812 captains of less than three years seniority wore only one epaulette.
In the modern navy the rank of officers is shown by the number of gold rings worn on the cuffs of the coat, and, in certain orders, on the shoulder. The uppermost ring include a curl. Until the Second World War an embroidered slash, which crossed the cuff rings, was worn on full dress uniform only. Additionally, embroidered shoulder boards, though no longer the elaborate gold cord epaulettes, are worn by flag officers on the greatcoat or coat.
From 1864 the gold cuff rings included a coloured distinguishing cloth between the rings. The Executive, seaman, or "Military" branch as it was known, wore no distinction cloth, so that the underlying blue cloth of the coat sleeve showed. Engineering officers wore purple cloth; Surgeon- scarlet (later pink for the medical service); dental- orange; paymaster (after 1944 supply and secretariat)- white; instructor- light blue (introduced 1879, and later white); shipwright and constructor- silver gray; electrical- dark green; ordnance- dark blue; wardmaster- maroon; and air branch- blue.

    Master Chen Yow Jong,

    Good luck and God bless.

  • Plug "Jean Michel Jarre" into your favorite search engine
and find the various opportunities to listen to his music that are online.
In 1992, it was remastered and renamed "The Celts" to be used by the BBC for the television series of the same name.
Have you ever noticed how whenever there's a tragic event like the recent bridge collapse in Minnesota that the various news channels manage to conjure up a theme song for each particular incident.
